The Smurfs Movie – Review
One of the anticipated kids movies this summer is The Smurfs. I watched the Smurfs cartoons on Saturday mornings when I was a little kid, so I was excited to take my boys to this movie.
The movie starts out with the Smurfs getting ready for the celebration of the Blue Moon. While out gathering smurf berries Clumsy smurf is spotted and chased by Gargamel (Hank Azaria). During the chase Clumsy leads Gargamel to Smurf Village. One thing leads to another and Papa Smurf (Jonathan Winters), Smurfette (Katy Perry), Clumsy (Anton Yelchin), Grouchy (George Lopez), Brainy (Fred Armisen), Gutsy(Alan Cumming) and Gargamel are all transported to present day New York City. They meet up with Patrick (Neil Patrick Harris) and try to find their way back to Smurf Village while trying to avoid Gargamel. Â Patrick is a marketing person for a makeup company in New York, and his boss is on him to create a new marketing plan for a line of cosmetics. Â The Smurfs go to work with Patrick and try to help him, but while at work all “Smurf” break loose.
I was surprised at how “scary” this movie is, my 5yr old jumped in his seat several times during the movie. The jokes were silly at best with lines like “I think I just smurfed in my mouth” and “Up smurf creek without a smurfing paddle”. Smurfette had a funny line (considering who plays her voice), “I kissed a smurf and I think I liked it”. Â The storyline and interactions of real characters and CGI characters reminded me of Alvin and the Chipmunks. This was an OK kids movie, but it does not come close to Cars 2.
