Tribute to 80’s Hair Bands

Read Time:5 Minute, 20 Second

Today, we take a look at everyone’s favorite era of music, the 80’s. Okay, maybe it’s not everyone’s favorite, but it was when the music video was born. MTV played music videos. They didn’t have any lame tv shows, they just played videos. In between the mix of Duran Duran & A-Ha videos you would some of my favorite memories. Of course I’m talking about the 80’s hair bands. Not only did they “rock”, but they most of their videos included the stuff Beavis & Butthead loved to make fun of.

Twisted Sister – I Wanna Rock

We start out with a bang. It’s the anthem of the youth, back in 1984. Of course, I listen to this song today, and I can see why this song was so popular. I mean, it’s catchy as hell.

As far as the video goes: Twisted Sister knew how to do videos. They make a mean stuffy suited guy, and when they start playing they’re guitars the mean guy always flys out a window. It’s the magical power of the guitar. Anyway, in this video, the principal starts torturing the kids, and of course Twisted Sister comes in to save the day. The principal starts hurting himself all over the place. rating: 4.5 out of 5

Slaughter – Up All Night

Here was a great song from my youth that I remember. Of course, they did a very common thing with these hair bands. They had a hot chick dancing. Although, what is stupid is the band is in another location than the chick is. I guess they weren’t that interested in getting with the chick, just staying up all night. It’s actually kind of an anthem for an 11 year old, because I always wanted to stay up late. Makes me finally realize why I liked this when I was 11. rating: 2.5 out of 5

Poison – I want Action

Poison was one of those bands when they first came out was totally into the glam rock look. This video for “I want Action” includes Comedy & Sex. Or at least it does at the beginning. This is so cheezy at the beginning of this, but then it turns into a stage with them playing. The problem with this is, there’s no one watching them play on stage. There’s no crowd. It’s kind of weird and it happens a lot in Poison videos. Also, the way they sing through the same mic together is really kind of gay. rating: 3 out of 5

Warrant – Down Boys

Next on the list is Warrant. I remember loving this song when I was younger. I even remember they played at Six Flags. My brother went there and brought me back a t-shirt. He told me they were a pretty dirty band for them playing at a “family friendly” venue. Anyway, this video starts out, you think something is going to happen, but it doesn’t. It’s mostly them playing in an empty warehouse. Although, its funny how they choreograph their headbanging. It makes me laugh at how cool I thought it was at the time, and now I’m just saying, what were they thinking?! rating: 2 out of 5

Ratt – Round & Round

This is one of my favorite songs from the 80s. I still think it’s a pretty good song. This video is kind of odd. You have a metal band & Milton Berle. Milton Berle as himself, and him dressed in drag. Its actually kind of funny that he’s in here, but in researching I found out that Ratt’s band manager was Milton Berle’s nephew. So, he was able to get him in a video for free! I unfortunately don’t have any famous uncles to put in my music videos. Anyway, this video has everything, it has the comedy, the gross factor, explosions, & women. rating: 4.5 out of 5

Cinderella – Shake Me

You gotta love Cinderella. Okay maybe not, I don’t even really like them. But, they revolutionized the whole band coming out of the poster thing. I always thought it was kind of odd that an all male band would name themselves “Cinderella”, but I guess I could say the same for Twisted Sister. This video shows Cinderella (the girl) and her wicked step sisters at a Cinderella concert. rating: 3 out of 5.

Bulletboys – Smooth Up

This song always cracked me up. Its one of those songs that my brother, Jeff, used to play over and over when we were younger. I wouldn’t ever listen to this song unless I’m trying to make a joke about hair bands. Anyway, this video is pretty boring for such a lyrically golden song. Although it does have some black and white animated stuff in there. Check out the lead singers pants, and you’ll wonder, why this band doesn’t have another hit. rating: 2 out of 5

Skid Row – 18 & Life

Hells yeah! One of my faves from the 80s. This video actually tells the story of Ricky, a young boy, you had a heart of stone. Okay, I’m not going to sing all the lyrics, but this was a pretty cool video. I especially love the part where he hells at his dad about some bullshit, and slams the door in his face. If you watch the new show on VH1, you can see that Sebastian Bach is quite the lunatic. rating: 4 out of 5

Tesla – Love Song

I had to put a song on my list for the ladies. Yes, “Love will find a way!”… Okay, here’s another one where the song is okay, but the video just sucks. Sorry about this one, but it’s basically another concert video. rating 1 out of 5

Motley Crue – Girls, Girls, Girls

Okay, you gotta give props to the Crue. This is the type of videos that Metallica refused to do. Apparently Metallica had a problem with strip clubs. I think this video is pretty cool. I mean, it’s got hot chicks and the cheesiness of an 80’s video. I’m sure this is one of those videos that was only played late at night because it was a little racy. rating: 5 out of 5.. woo!

So, anyway, there’s my reviews of some 80s hair videos. I hope you like it, please comment, Even if you hate it, I’d like to hear what you have to say. Well, until next time, see ya…

  1. Awesome, amazing, loved it. However, you should have put Metallica’s “One” video in as the antithesis to all this glam fun!
